Brazilian Portuguese Pronounciation
This is a rough guide to pronouncing written Portuguese for Capoeira
songs. There are many accent differences in different regions of
Brazil, so it is important to listen carefully to Capoeira music,
following the lyrics with your eyes, and starting to associate the
sounds you are hearing with the words you are seeing. Think of this
guide here as a bit of a "head-start". Once you get used to the general
rules of pronouncing Brazilian Portuguese, it will become easy to pick
up new songs.
If you want to learn Portuguese (very important for serious
Capoeiristas), make sure it is Brazilian and not European Portuguese
that you learn! It would be like wanting to learn English to
communicate in Australia, then learning English will a London accent.
Words are pronounced quite differently, and some words have completely
different meanings, eg. "bicha" in European Portuguese is a queue, but
in Brazilan Portuguese, it means "animal." Can you imagine asking
someone if they are "waiting in the animal?"
